Rio Ferdinand lavished praise on Philippe Coutinho for the midfielder’s “exquisite” finish in a 1-1 draw at Spartak Moscow on Tuesday night.

The South American made his first Champions League appearance in Russia after Coutinho was a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw with Spanish side Sevilla in their opening fixture earlier this month.

Coutinho was in good form heading to Moscow after Coutinho netted a brilliant free-kick in Liverpool’s 3-2 win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.

The 25-year-old conceded a 20th-minute free-kick to give Fernando the chance to beat Loris Karius despite the Spartak Moscow midfielder’s effort being relatively central.

Coutinho made amends for his role in the home side’s goal with a brilliant effort of his own after the Brazilian midfielder combined with Sadio Mane before lifting his finish into the roof of the net.

Liverpool were unable to find a winner despite dominating the Champions League clash as Jurgen Klopp’s continue their winless start to their European campaign.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was impressed with Coutinho’s equaliser in Russia on his return to Liverpool’s Champions League side.

“This is Coutinho at his supreme best,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“It was exquisite football.”

Coutinho scored 13 goals and made seven assists in the Premier League last season.
