Owen Hargreaves reacts to Marouane Fellaini’s display in Man United’s 3-0 win over Basel
The Manchester United legend heaps praise on Ashley Young for his role in Marouane Fellaini's opener
Owen Hargreaves heaped praise on Ashley Young for his role in Marouane Fellaini’s goal after Manchester United eased to a 3-0 victory over Basel in their Champions League opener.
The Red Devils were forced to make an early change after stand-in captain Paul Pogba was forced off with a hamstring injury in the first half at Old Trafford.
Fellaini replaced the club-record signing and the former Everton man broke the deadlock with a powerful header after Young found the towering midfielder with an accurate cross.
The Belgian midfielder has now scored in his last two games at Old Trafford following his goal in Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Leicester City last month.
Summer signing Romelu Lukaku and substitute Marcus Rashford both scored second half goals to seal three points.
Former Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves was particularly impressed with Young’s contribution to Fellaini’s opener at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
“Credit Ashley Young. It’s a wonderful piece of play. It’s a brilliant switch from Mkhitaryan. It was a wonderful ball into Fellaini. The ball was perfect,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.
“Fellaini gets above his defender. There is only one winner there. That cross is perfect and Fellaini is the perfect player to have on the end of it. Man United deserve it.”
Manchester United are sitting at the top of the Premier League table despite a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Red Devils have already beaten Swansea City, West Ham United and Leicester in the Premier League so far this season.
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013, while the Red Devils last got their hands on the Champions League crown in 2008.
