Steven Gerrard reacts to Marouane Fellaini’s display in Man United’s 3-0 win over Basel
The Liverpool legend praises Marouane Fellaini for his performance in Manchester United's 3-0 victory over Basel
Steven Gerrard believes Marouane Fellaini brings something different to Manchester United after the Belgian midfielder opened the scoring in Wednesday night’s 3-0 win against Basel.
The defensive midfielder was a first-half subsitute for Paul Pogba after the France international suffered a hamstring injury as he captained the Red Devils for the first time.
Fellaini broke the deadlock before half-time with a clinical header following Ashley Young’s superb cross to find the former Everton midfielder.
Summer signing Romelu Lukaku doubled the home side’s lead with a header of his own on his Champions League debut for the Red Devils following his compatriot’s opener.
Fellaini teed up substitute Marcus Rashford in the final five minutes as the England international made it 3-0 to continue Manchester United’s prolific start to the season at Old Trafford.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard was impressed with Fellaini’s performance in Manchester United’s landslide victory over the Swiss champions.
“Manchester United were making chances but not getting the breakthrough,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “What Fellaini does is he gives Manchester United more variety and different options.”
Fellaini moved to Manchester United in a £27m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in 2013.
The Red Devils will face CSKA Moscow in their next Champions League fixture before Benfica make the trip to Old Trafford.
Manchester United are sitting at the top of the Premier League table ahead of Manchester City on goal difference.
