Juan Mata sends stern warning to Man United ahead of Basel clash
The Manchester United star has a stern warning for his team-mates about Basel ahead of their Champions League opener
Juan Mata has warned Manchester United that it would be a big mistake to underestimate Basel ahead of their Champions League clash on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils will return to Champions League action for the first time since December 2015 under Louis van Gaal when Manchester United crashed out at the group stage.
Manchester United are unbeaten in the Premier League after four games, although their 100 per cent record came to an end following a 2-2 draw with Stoke City on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s side were 4-0 winners against both West Ham United and Swansea City in their opening two Premier League games before a 2-0 victory over Leicester City.
Manchester United qualified for the Champions League after a 2-0 win against Dutch giants Basel in the Europa League final in Stockholm back in May.
The most-successful Premier League team in history were pitted against Basel, CSKA Moscow and Benfica in the group-stage draw.
And Manchester United midfielder Mata warned his Red Devils team-mates that they can ill-afford to underestimate the Swiss champions.
“Now it’s time to focus on the Champions League, which is back at Old Trafford,” Mata wrote on his personal blog.
“We’re really looking forward to listening again to that nice music before the game, and we’re sure the atmosphere in the stadium is going to be amazing, as it always is during the big European nights.
“We play against Basel, who won the last league in Switzerland with authority. They did play in the Champions League last season and it would be a big mistake to under-estimate them. I’ve already played against them in the past and I suffered their carefree, offensive football style.”
Mata was part of the Chelsea team that won the Champions League in 2012 thanks to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena.
