Rio Ferdinand has challenged Romelu Lukaku to write his name into Manchester United folklore following his switch from Everton in the summer.

The Belgian striker has made a flying start to life at Old Trafford since his transfer to the club, scoring four Premier League goals in four games.

The 24-year-old also opened his Champions League account with his first goal in the competition during the 3-0 win over Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Ferdinand believes that Lukaku has the potential to emulate the likes of Didier Drogba’s success at Chelsea if he focuses on delivering in the big games for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Speaking on BT Sport on Tuesday night, Ferdinand said: “He should be looking up to Drogba to see what he can add to his game.

“Lukaku scores a lot of goals. When you look at Drogba’s goal record it wouldn’t blow you away in terms of numbers, but he scored big, important goals. He scored goals in cup finals and league deciders.

“This is what Lukaku has to do. This is where he will become loved and become folklore if he does this for Manchester United.”

Lukaku will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a clash against his former side Everton at Old Trafford.

Mourinho’s men are currently leading the way at the top of the Premier League table, after having won three of their opening four top-flight games.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at the club last season but also won the EFL Cup and Europa League.
