Jose Mourinho lavished praise on Marcus Rashford following his “phenomenal” performance for Manchester United against Southampton on Saturday.

The 19-year-old played the full 90 minutes at St Mary’s as he helped Mourinho’s men notch up a vital three points in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game as the Red Devils kept pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after six games.

Rashford has been earning huge amounts of praise since breaking into the first team at Manchester United in recent seasons.

And Mourinho was clearly delighted by Rashford’s performance for the Red Devils against the Saints on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, a clearly delighted Mourinho said: “Marcus was phenomenal, he was phenomenal.

“Cedric [Soares] is a very good offensive full back, and [James] Ward-Prowse is a good crosser of the ball, so it was a good side.

“Marcus felt what everybody else felt in the team, if we don’t concede we win three points, so let’s fight hard not to concede.”

England starlet Rashford will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Champions League action on Wednesday night with a clash against CSKA Moscow in Russia.

The Red Devils kicked off their Champions League bid with a 3-0 win over Basel at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Rashford helped Manchester United win the Europa League last season to seal a return to the Champions League in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
