Ryan Giggs says Real Madrid are still the team to beat in the Champions League this season

Ryan Giggs believes that Manchester United are short of being able to win the Champions League this season.

The Red Devils secured their return to Europe’s elite club competition by winning the Europa League last term despite having finished sixth in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho has been tasked with bringing European and Premier League glory back to Old Trafford following his appointment at Manchester United back in May of last year.

However, Manchester United legend Giggs believes that the current Red Devils squad are still some way behind the likes of Real Madrid in this season’s competition.

Giggs told Sky Sports: “You look at the current Manchester United team and you wonder if they can they win the Champions League? Have they got the players to win it?

“They’re probably a little bit short at the moment. You’ve got Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, if he fulfils his potential, Marcus Rashford, David de Gea, a world-class player, and then if you add somebody like Gareth Bale to the mix, that’s when you talk about United having Champions League expectations.

“Obviously, Mourinho has won the trophy before so we’re going to be there or thereabouts, but whether we’ve got the players to go the whole way, I don’t know.

“Apart from Real Madrid, obviously you’ve got PSG, who have made big intentions this year, but it could be quite open otherwise with Barcelona losing Neymar and not making the best start.

“You have to look at Real Madrid, what they’ve done after the last two years and the players they’ve got, as the team to beat.”

Manchester United are currently top of the Premier League table after having won three of their opening four games.

The Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw by Stoke City last weekend and will aim to get back to winning ways when they take on Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United last won the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999 and 2008.

Mourinho is aiming to steer the Red Devils towards Premier League glory this season, with their most recent title triumph coming back in the 2012-13 campaign, when Ferguson was still in charge.
