Jose Mourinho has told “defensive” Chelsea that he will try and win the title with Manchester United playing exciting attacking football this season.

The Blues won the Premier League title last season in Antonio Conte’s first campaign in charge at the club, after the west London side had slumped to a 10th-placed finish following Mourinho’s sacking in December 2015.

Chelsea were able to focus solely on domestic affairs last term as they lifted the trophy for the second time in three seasons under the Italian manager.

Manchester United, meanwhile, struggled for consistent form last term as they finished in sixth place in the Premier League in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge.

However, the Red Devils have made a strong start to the new campaign and Manchester United are currently top of the Premier League table after having taken 10 points from their opening four games.

And Mourinho has aimed a not-so-subtle dig at Chelsea following their title triumph last term as he targets success with Manchester United this season.

Mourinho is quoted as saying by Metro: “We try to play the best we can.

“We know that if you look in a pragmatic way, you see the last winners of the Premier League, the last winners of the Premier League, they did not play attacking football. They played defensive football and counter-attack football.

“So according to the results, that is the way to win the Premier League.

“We try to play according to the qualities of our players. We try to play positive, we try to play good, but we try to win.”

Manchester United are preparing to make a return to the group stage of the Champions League on Tuesday night when they host Basel at Old Trafford.
