Steven Gerrard believes that Marouane Fellaini can be a dangerous player for Manchester United when deployed in a forward role in Jose Mourinho’s team.

Fellaini moved to Manchester United as David Moyes’ first signing back in the summer of 2013 after the Scot’s appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.

The Belgian midfielder has not been much of a regular fixture in the team but he has still been found a role by Mourinho since the Portuguese coach took over back in May last year.

Indeed, Fellaini has not started any of Manchester United’s four Premier League games this season but has come off the bench three times.

He came off the bench in the first half during Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday night and scored one of the Red Devils’ three goals.

Gerrard played against Fellaini during his time at Liverpool and the former Reds captain believes that the Belgian can be a useful asset for Mourinho’s side.

Speaking on BT Sport on Tuesday night, Gerrard said: “He is very awkward. In the middle of the pitch he never used to hurt you or harm you.

“You could play round him and he didn’t really bother you.

“At Everton as a forward, he could hurt you. He’d back into you and people could run off him. He could be a right handful.

“If people get quality deliveries into the box, he’ll score goals for Man United.”

Manchester United, who finished sixth last season, return to Premier League action with a clash against Fellaini’s former side Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
