Michael Owen claimed that Anthony Martial has a similar penalty technique to Manchester United legend Eric Cantona after the France star scored in an emphatic 4-1 win against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils forward made his second successive start in the Champions League for the trip to Russia after the 21-year-old scored against CSKA Moscow in a 1-1 draw under Louis van Gaal in 2015.

And Martial teed up Romelu Lukaku for both of the Belgium international’s goals as CSKA Moscow struggled to contain the in-form forward throughout most of the first half.

The former Monaco striker got his reward for a strong display with a penalty in the 20th minute to double the visitors’ lead after Henrikh Mkhitaryan was brought down in Igor Akinfeev’s area.

And Martial confidently placed his finish past the Russia international to take his tally to six goals in all competitions so far this season.

Former Manchester United striker Owen saw similarities between Martial and his French compatriot and Red Devils legend Cantona in terms of penalty technique.

“I like that type of penalty taker,” Owen told BT Sport.

“It takes a decent bit of courage. Eric Cantona used to do the same. He never hits the corner, so you know he is waiting for the goalkeeper to move [before hitting].”

Manchester United made Martial the most expensive teenager in the world when he moved to Old Trafford in a £36m deal from AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window.
