Jose Mourinho has revealed that Anthony Martial was taken off as a precaution during Manchester United’s 4-1 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old striker was in fine form for the Red Devils on Wednesday night in Russia as he scored one and set up two in a man-of-the-match display for Mourinho’s men.

However, Martial was brought off after 72 minutes of the game due to a minor injury concern – and Mourinho admitted that he would have loved to have kept him on for longer.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Mourinho said: “It was a pity he couldn’t play for 90 minutes because I was ready to leave him on the pitch for the whole game.”

It remains to be seen whether Martial will be fit enough to start for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford.

Manchester United head into the game in fine form in the Premier League, having won five of their six opening games to leave them level on points with leaders Manchester City.

Mourinho is aiming to become the first manager to lead Manchester United to the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final triumph in the 2012-13 campaign.

The Red Devils already look as if they have improved significantly after their sixth-placed finish last season.
