Jose Mourinho says he has been thrilled by Anthony Martial’s recent performances for Manchester United.

The French striker made something of a quiet start to life under Mourinho following the Portuguese coach’s appointment at Old Trafford in May 2016.

However, Martial has been in strong form this season whenever called upon by the Manchester United boss, with the striker netting three goals in his first five appearances in the Premier League.

Martial first broke onto the scene under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford following his move from Monaco in September 2015.

Now, Mourinho believes that there have been significant improvements in Martial’s game in the last few months.

Speaking at a news conference before the trip to Southampton on Saturday, Mourinho said: “I see a great improvement in the person, his mood, body language, his happiness. He’s a happy guy, who’s working well.

“In the last match at home he tries to enjoy it and I’m very pleased with his attitude overall.”

Martial will be hoping to feature when Manchester United return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they take on CSKA Moscow in Russia.

The Red Devils are aiming to progress through to the last 16 of the Champions League after having won the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge last term.

Manchester United also lifted the League Cup but finished in a disappointing sixth place in the Premier League table under Mourinho last season.
