Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United midfield duo Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic are in the form of their lives.

The Red Devils have made a promising start to the Premier League season following a return of 13 points from five games to leave Mourinho’s level with leaders Manchester City.

Manchester United signed Serbia international Nemanja Matic in a £40m deal from Premier League champions Chelsea last month.

Matic has already made a big impact at Old Trafford after shoring up Mourinho’s midfield and allowing Paul Pogba to have more freedom to express himself.

The club-record signing’s injury has afforded Mourinho the opportunity to use Fellaini alongside Matic in their last two games in the Champions League and the Premier League.

Mourinho has been impressed with both Fellaini and Matic ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Southampton in their next Premier League game on Saturday.

“In this moment, Matic and Fellaini are in the best form that I have ever seen them,” Mourinho told his pre-match media conference.

“I never saw Matic playing so well. I never saw Fellaini playing so well.”

Fellaini has already scored two goals in five appearances in all competitions in the 2017-18 season so far.

Manchester United signed ex Chelsea midfielder Matic, Benfica defender Victor Lindelof and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in their first season under Mourinho but ended up in sixth place.
