Frank Lampard: Paul Pogba will give Man United duo chance to shine
The Chelsea legend is interested to see how Jose Mourinho's Manchester United midfield shapes up in the absence of Paul Pogba
Frank Lampard believes Paul Pogba’s injury will give Jose Mourinho the chance to experiment with the Manchester United midfield.
The France international was handed the captain’s armband for Manchester United’s home clash against Swiss outfit Basel in the Champions League group stage.
Pogba, though, was forced off in the first half with a hamstring injury as much-maligned Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini replaced the club-record signing.
The 28-year-old linked up impressively with summer signing Nemanja Matic as Fellaini broke the deadlock before the towering midfielder teed up Marcus Rashford for their third goal.
Matic moved to Manchester United in a £40m deal from Premier League champions Chelsea in the summer transfer window despite helping the Blues to win the title last term.
Pogba has made an impressive start to the current campaign after scoring two goals and making two assists in four Premier League games.
However, former Chelsea midfielder Lampard is excited to see whether Fellaini and Matic can forge a promising partnership in the absence of £89m signing Pogba.
“Pogba not playing there gave Jose a chance to play Fellaini next to Matic to have a base which he will want in big games,” Lampard told BT Sport on Tuesday night.
“When Pogba comes back the question will be whether he plays him in a more advanced position to help the team.”
Pogba moved to Manchester United in a then world-record deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the summer transfer window.
The France star won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford.
