Paul Scholes makes exciting claim about Man United midfield: They’re as good as any
The Man United legend believes Jose Mourinho's midfield is as good as any during the Premier League era at Old Trafford
Paul Scholes has claimed that Manchester United’s current midfield options would rival the great Red Devils teams under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Jose Mourinho signed Serbia international Nemanja Matic in a £40m deal from defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
Matic has provided Mourinho with another options to complement Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have proven to be imperious in their opening six Premier League fixtures of the 2017-18 season following a return of 16 points from six games.
The Red Devils have scored a staggering 17 goals, conceded two goals and kept five clean sheets to establish themselves as one of the favourites for the Premier League title.
Scholes was part of a formidable midfield under Ferguson that contained Republic of Ireland legend Roy Keane, Argentina international Juan Sebastian Veron and Nicky Butt.
The former Manchester United star believes Mourinho’s current midfield is as good as any throughout Old Trafford’s decorated Premier League history.
“I remember when there was me and Roy (Keane), (Juan Sebastian) Veron, Nicky Butt and Ryan (Giggs) who played in central midfield,” Scholes told Metro.
“There was an abundance of good midfielders and I think now they’ve got the same kind of squad.
“You’ve got (Ander) Herrera who is not getting a game, Michael Carrick who’s not getting a game. (Paul) Pogba and (Nemanja) Matic seem to be the first choice but Mourinho can mix and match; the midfield should be as good as any.”
The Red Devils signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window before landing Matic in a surprise deal.
Manchester United won the EFL Cup and the Europa League last season.
