Jamie Carragher: Man United signing shouldn’t be compared to Didier Drogba

The Liverpool legend believes Romelu Lukaku should be compared to Man United icons Ruud van Nistelrooy and Andy Cole

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku shouldn’t be compared to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

The Red Devils signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window to bolster their attacking options.

The 24-year-old has struggled to shake off the tag that he struggles in big-game environments despite scoring 25 goals in 36 games last season for the Toffees.

Lukaku has regularly been likened to Drogba after Chelsea signed the Belgium international from Anderlecht in 2011 before sending the striker out on loan to Everton and West Brom.

The powerful centre-forward was sold to Everton in a permanent deal in 2014 after Jose Mourinho failed to guarantee Lukaku regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.

However, Mourinho clearly had faith in Lukaku’s talent after making the Belgian striker the second most-expensive signing in Manchester United’s history.

Lukaku has already scored seven times in seven games in the Champions League and the Premier League in the 2017-18 season so far.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Lukaku is more like Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy and Andy Cole rather than Drogba.

“Sometimes the way we speak about Lukaku is different to how we speak about Kane or Aguero. Sometimes people want a bit more from Lukaku,” Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.

“Because he came through at Chelsea and was a huge presence people thought he was going to replace Drogba but he’s not like Drogba. Drogba could be Man of the Match in a game he didn’t score in, he could dominate a whole back four by running channels and overpowering people. Lukaku is more like Ruud van Nistelrooy or Andy Cole.

“For me, his goalscoring record is phenomenal and will continue to be at Manchester United.

“The criticisms have to stop. His numbers are so good. He’s like Van Nistelrooy, he’s not Drogba. Just because he has the same physical attributes as him doesn’t mean he has to play like him.”

Lukaku scored six times in six games in the Premier League so far this season following his winner at Southampton on Saturday.
