Steven Gerrard: How Romelu Lukaku has improved at Man United
The former Liverpool captain has been impressed with Romelu Lukaku's performance since moving to Manchester United
Steven Gerrard believes Romelu Lukaku has more of a spring in his step since moving to Manchester United.
The Red Devils signed the Belgium international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window to bolster their attacking options.
Lukaku scored 25 goals in 36 games in the Premier League last season to finish as the division’s second-highest goal-scorer behind Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
The 24-year-old was linked with a move to Premier League champions Chelsea but Manchester United managed to hijack the west London side’s deal to re-sign the forward.
Lukaku has already netted four goals in four Premier League games to help Manchester United to secure top spot in the table.
The Belgian forward scored his first Champions League goal in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win against Basel in their group-stage opener.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard has been impressed with Lukaku’s impact at Manchester United since his big-money summer move.
“At Everton, he was more selfish. He played for himself at times,” Gerrard told BT Sport on Tuesday night.
“At certain times he has been accused of being lazy and I could see that.
“But since he’s going to Man United he has a spring in his step and he is working hard. He looks like he is being less selfish.
“He is getting his reward because he has more quality around him.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but won the EFL Cup and the Europa League.
The Red Devils have also re-signed former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the 35-year-old centre-forward netted 28 times in all competitions.
