Rio Ferdinand has warned Romelu Lukaku that the Manchester United signing needs to score regularly in the Champions League and the Premier League to become a world-class striker.

The Belgium international was signed in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window after the Red Devils managed to beat Chelsea to the forward’s signature.

Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season as the Everton centre-forward finished behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the goal-scoring charts.

The 24-year-old has faced some criticism in recent seasons for his subdued performances in Everton’s biggest Premier League games.

Lukaku has already scored four times in four games in the Premier League to help Manchester United secure top spot in the table.

The Belgian forward opened his Champions League account in a Red Devils shirt with the second goal in Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Basel in their opening group-stage game.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand told Lukaku what he has to do to establish himself as one of the world’s top strikers.

“If he wants to elevate himself into the elite of being a world-class striker he has to produce in the Champions League,” Ferdinand told BT Sport on Tuesday night.

“He’s the top goal-scorer in the Premier League as it stands but he’s got to make sure that he puts the chances away.

“He’s already mussed some big chances. But we know he can finish when he does get chances, he’s just got to do it consistently.”

Manchester United will host Everton in their next Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
