Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United team are yet to be properly tested this season, according to Darren Bent.

The Red Devils have made a strong start to the new campaign under the Portuguese coach as he looks to become the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to lift the trophy at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have won four of their opening five Premier League games to leave them joint top of the table alongside bitter rivals Manchester City.

However, Mourinho is set to be without key midfielder Paul Pogba for some time after he suffered a hamstring injury during the 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League last week.

And Bent feels that the absence of Manchester United’s club-record signing is set to present the Red Devils with their first real test of the season.

Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Bent said: “That’s when we’re going to find out how good they really are. With Paul Pogba out, he’s started the season really well.

“With those next six games, that’s going to tell us an awful lot about his squad and how good they are.

“I don’t think they’ve really been tested, apart from Everton at the start of the second half.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to St Mary’s to take on Southampton.

The Red Devils coped well in Pogba’s absence last weekend as they sealed a 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford in the Premier League to keep their title bid on track.

Manchester United finished sixth but won the League Cup and Europa League last season.
