Phil Thompson believes that Liverpool will finish fourth in the Premier League table behind Manchester United this season.

Liverpool ended up in fourth place in the Premier League table last season as Jurgen Klopp steered the Reds to Champions League qualification in his first full campaign in charge.

Manchester United, meanwhile, endured a campaign to forget in the Premier League under Jose Mourinho as they had to settle for a sixth-placed finish in the top flight.

However, Mourinho still managed to steer his side to Champions League qualification after they won the Europa League last season.

The Red Devils have made a strong star tot the new campaign under Mourinho, while Liverpool will be hoping to build on their fourth-placed finish last season.

And former Liverpool man Thompson reckons the Reds are poised to finish fourth in the table and downplayed the chances of them playing a major part in the title race.

Asked which teams he thinks will be involved in the title race, Thompson told The Debate on Sky Sports: “I would think Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.”

Then, asked where he thinks Liverpool will finish, he replied: “Fourth.”

Liverpool return to Champions League action on Tuesday night when they travel to Russia to take on Spartak Moscow.
