Steven Gerrard believes Paul Pogba’s injury setback is a massive blow to Manchester United despite having options to replace their club-record signing.

Jose Mourinho handed the France international the captain’s armband for their Champions League opener against Swiss side Basel on Tuesday night.

However, the former world-record signing lasted less than 20 minutes before the versatile midfielder was forced off with an injury problem.

Marouane Fellaini replaced Pogba and the Belgian star broke the deadlock before he teed up Marcus Rashford for the home side’s third goal in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

The former Juventus midfielder has made an impressive start to the Premier League season following a return of two goals and two assists in four top-flight fixtures.

Mourinho has Michael Carrick and Fellaini who are both capable of partnering Nemanja Matic in the Manchester United midfield for the visit of Everton on Sunday.

But Liverpool legend Gerrard insists Pogba’s hamstring problem is bad news for Manchester United despite having capable options to fill the Frenchman’s void in the starting line-up.

“They’ve got options. They’ve got Michael Carrick can come in,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “He has got a lot of experience. Herrera has come out of the team but he did well last year.

“I don’t think it will affect them that much but it is still a blow because he is a big player for them.”

Pogba moved to Manchester United in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus last summer following the appointment of Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor.
