Pat Nevin hailed Romelu Lukaku as a “beast” after the striker fired Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Belgian striker has made a strong start to life at Old Trafford since signing for the Red Devils from Everton in the summer transfer window.

The forward has shown that he looks to be capable of leading the line at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho and he gave his side the lead in the 20th minute at St Mary’s when he scored from a rebound.

It was Lukaku’s sixth goal in six consecutive Premier League games for the Red Devils since his transfer to Old Trafford back in July.

And Nevin clearly believes that the Red Devils have recruited a top-quality forward.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live after Lukaku’s opening goal, Nevin said: “It was just too much power for Southampton to deal with.

“Lukaku is a goal-scorer. He just totally comes alive and is a beast in that area. Did you think there would be any other outcome? I didn’t.”

Manchester United now return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they take on CSKA Moscow in Russia.

The Red Devils kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 3-0 home win over Basel at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Manchester United booked their place in Europe’s elite club competition by winning the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign at the club last season.
