Steven Gerrard has admitted that Jose Mourinho is proving to be the “difference” at Manchester United this season.

The Red Devils continued their strong start to the new campaign on Saturday when they beat Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s sixth goal in as many Premier League games.

Manchester United look like they will be one of the major contenders for the Premier League title this season, with Mourinho’s men having won five of their opening six top-flight games.

Mourinho’s side are currently second in the table, behind leaders Manchester City on goal difference.

The Red Devils only finished sixth under Mourinho last season but former Liverpool captain Gerrard now believes that the Portuguese coach is starting to make all the difference at Old Trafford.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show on Saturday, Gerrard said: “He’s the difference.

“When they get their noses in front he’s got them well-drilled and putting their bodies on the line. That’s why he’s so successful as a manager.

“Sometimes they don’t play well but they got the three points at a difficult place.”

Manchester United will now turn their attentions back to Champions League affairs and their trip to CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils kicked off their European campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Basel at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Manchester United secured their return to the Champions League for this season by beating Ajax to win the Europa League last term.
