Jose Mourinho confirms these two players will start in Man United v Basel
The Manchester United manager is planning to start both Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling against Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday
Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling will start Manchester United’s home clash against Basel on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils boss has stuck with Eric Bailly and Phil Jones as his first-choice centre-half partnership for their opening four games of the Premier League season.
Bailly and Jones were widely praised for helping Manchester United to keep three consecutive clean sheets in victories over West Ham United, Swansea City and Leicester City.
However, Manchester United conceded twice in a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday evening to bring to an end their clean sheet record and 100 per cent start.
The Red Devils will switch their focus to the Champions League on Wednesday night when Swiss side Basel make the trip to Old Trafford in their first group-stage fixture.
And Mourinho confirmed that he will change his centre-half pairing for the visit of the Swiss champions in their Champions League curtain raiser.
Asked about Jones, Mourinho told his pre-match media conference:
“He’s playing well for us. He’s probably tired with two consecutive matches with the national team but he cannot play on Tuesday so it’s good that on Tuesday he gets his rest and it’s an opportunity for Smalling and Lindelof to play the Champions League match.”
Manchester United are sitting at the top of the Premier League table ahead of derby rivals Manchester City on goal difference.
The Red Devils have already beaten West Ham United, Swansea City and Leicester City this term.
