Martin Keown makes title admission about Chelsea v Arsenal
The Gunners legend is backing Chelsea to beat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon
Martin Keown believes Chelsea v Arsenal could define both London clubs’ Premier League seasons.
The Gunners will make the short trip across the English capital to face the defending champions at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Arsenal suffered a chastening 4-0 loss to title rivals Liverpool in their last Premier League game on the road to raise questions about their title bid.
Chelsea suffered a disastrous start to their title defence following a 3-2 loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season.
However, the west London side have responded in true champions’ spirit following successive victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Leicester City.
The Blues lost 3-0 to Arsenal at The Emirates last season before Chelsea exacted their revenge with a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge back in February.
Former Arsenal defender Keown believes the Premier League clash at the defending champions this weekend could define both Arsenal and Chelsea’s seasons like their clashes did last term.
“This was a league-defining game last year and it could shape both clubs’ seasons again this time,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Arsenal won 3-0 at the Emirates last September, but Antonio Conte obviously changed to three at the back after that first-half demolition and never looked back, whereas Arsenal could not kick on in the same way.
“I’ve been impressed with how Chelsea have ground out results this season, while Arsenal’s only clean sheet of the season has come against Bournemouth, who have not looked like scoring too often this season.”
Chelsea were 6-0 winners against Qarabag in their Champions League group-stage opener on Tuesday night.
The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window including Spanish forward Alvaro Morata.
Arsenal beat Chelsea in the Community Shield and the FA Cup in their last two meetings at Wembley.
