Rio Ferdinand has urged Liverpool to develop a ruthless streak if Jurgen Klopp’s players want to challenge for the Premier League and the Champions League this season.

Liverpool surrendered a lead in the 72nd minute at Anfield on Wednesday night as Sevilla managed to rescue a 2-2 draw in their Champions League opener despite the home side dominating the Group E clash.

The Reds missed out on the chance to start the new Premier League campaign with a victory Liverpool conceded a late goal in a 3-3 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.

The Merseyside outfit have beaten Crystal Palace and Arsenal in impressive fashion in the Premier League, while the Reds were 6-3 aggregate winners against German club Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff.

Liverpool are looking to challenge for the Premier League title this season after finishing in fourth place in the table last term.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand warned the Merseyside outfit that they must develop a ruthless streak to win silverware in the 2017-18 campaign.

“They are great to watch,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “They have great exciting players. They have to be more ruthless. They have to finish teams off. They got caught on the sucker punch.”

Liverpool signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull’s Scottish defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Andy Robertson.

The Reds will host Burnley in their next Premier League game on Saturday afternoon.
