Arsene Wenger replies when asked when Santi Cazorla will make Arsenal return
Arsene Wenger says Santi Cazorla is unlikely to feature for Arsenal until after Christmas
Arsene Wenger has ruled out the possibility of Santi Cazorla featuring again for Arsenal before Christmas but says the midfielder is making good progress on his recovery from injury.
The Spanish playmaker has not featured for the Gunners since last October after suffering an Achilles problem and requiring numerous operations to try and correct the issue.
Cazorla now seems to be on the comeback trail and he will look to work on his fitness levels in the coming weeks and months as he bids to make his return to competitive action for Arsenal.
And Wenger seemed cautiously optimistic that Cazorla will be back in action sooner rather than later for the north London side.
Speaking at a news conference at Arsenal’s training ground on Thursday morning Wenger said of Cazorla: “The flexibility of his ankle looks good, his mobility is good and now it’s about getting back to full fitness without having any setbacks.
“It’s very difficult to predict when he will be available again. I think it’s very difficult to set a time. Not before Christmas, that’s why I didn’t involve him in the Europa League, but overall I hope that after Christmas he will be available.
“Yes [I think he’ll play at the highest level again],” added the boss. “But he has not played for a year now. He’s had a few surgeries so you are always cautious to set a time or date, but overall, yes it looks positive.”
Arsenal return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Bournemouth at The Emirates.
The Gunners are aiming to get back to winning ways in the top flight after they were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield before the international break.
