Thierry Henry sends message to Man United striker: You have to impress
The Arsenal legend urges Anthony Martial to continue to seize his chance to impress in the Manchester United side
Thierry Henry has urged Anthony Martial to continue to impress even when coming off the bench for Manchester United.
The France international struggled to make an impression during Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils forward was linked with a potential move to Serie A duo Inter Milan and AS Roma in the summer.
However, Manchester United refused to consider selling Martial despite reports of a £25m offer from Tottenham Hotspur.
Martial has been largely limited to substitute appearances from the bench in the Premier League this season although the 21-year-old has scored three goals and made one assist.
The former Monaco forward came off the bench to score in Manchester United’s 4-0 win against Everton at Old Trafford last weekend.
Former Arsenal striker Henry admits he has been impressed with Martial’s impact from the bench so far this term.
“He is not a young player any more – maybe by age,” Henry told Sky Sports.
“If you have two minutes or even one minute, I remember those days, you have to impress. You have to do something.
‘That’s why he went for the ball. That was his time. He wanted to score.”
Martial moved to Manchester United in a £36m deal from Monaco during the 2015 summer transfer window.
The France star scored on his Manchester United debut in a 3-1 win against Liverpool under Louis van Gaal.
