Dimitar Berbatov believes that it is time for Tottenham to live up to their potential by winning a trophy.

Spurs have developed into one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking sides under Mauricio Pochettino in recent seasons and came close to winning the title last term when they ended up second behind champions Chelsea.

The Lilywhites also came close to winning the title back in the 2015-16 campaign but they ended up losing out to Leicester City.

Tottenham have made a mixed start to the new season, after having won just one of their opening three games to leave them ninth in the table.

But former Spurs forward Berbatov believes that Pochettino’s men have the perfect platform to challenge for major trophies in the coming seasons.

Berbatov told Goal: “Spurs are a better team than when I was there. But don’t forget we won the cup (League Cup in 2007/08) then.

“Now they have a new training ground, they are building a new stadium, have good players… the only thing missing is a cup.

“They have developed so much over the years, which speaks a great deal for the desire to be among the best clubs, and I think with some more consistency they will be there soon. They have all the tools to achieve this.”

Tottenham return to Premier League action this weekend when they take on Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Lilywhites were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley in their most recent top-flight outing.
