Mark Lawrenson sends honest message to Arsenal about Arsene Wenger
The Liverpool legend believes Arsenal made a mistake keeping on Arsene Wenger beyond the summer
Arsenal should have parted company with Arsene Wenger in the summer, Mark Lawrenson says.
The Gunners slumped to their third defeat of the 2017-18 season on Saturday evening following a 2-1 loss at Watford.
Troy Deeney cancelled out Per Mertesacker’s opener from the penalty spot before Tom Cleverley netted an added-time winner.
The north London side continued their miserable run on the road to leave Wenger’s men nine points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Arsenal lost 1-0 at Stoke City before a resounding 4-0 defeat at the hands of title rivals Liverpool at Anfield in August.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table to miss out on a place in the Champions League in the 2017-18 campaign.
Wenger managed to end the season on a high note with a 2-1 win against Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
The north London outfit rewarded Wenger with a new contract ahead of the expiration of his deal.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Wenger’s decorated reign should have come to an end at the end last term.
“If you’re sat in the dressing room every summer, eventually it is same old, same old,” Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Arsenal should have said in the summer we’ll build you a statue, you’ve been fantastic.
“He’s been brilliant for Arsenal and the Premier League. There comes a time when you have to say goodbye.”
Wenger has guided Arsenal to three FA Cup titles in the past four seasons.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
