Thierry Henry: Why Arsene Wenger’s handling of Arsenal duo surprised me
The Arsenal legend was surprised to see Arsene Wenger resist the urge to rush Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez back into the Gunners team
Thierry Henry has admitted that he is surprised Arsene Wenger has resisted the temptation to rush Mesut Ozil back into his Arseanl team.
The Gunners boss made the interesting decision to leave both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez out of his starting line-up for the trip to the defending Premier League champions Chelsea last month.
In fact, Ozil didn’t even make the bench as the Germany international was sidelined with a knee problem, although some former Arsenal players such as Ian Wright have questioned the World Cup winner’s injury.
Wenger made Sanchez wait until their home clash with West Brom before restoring the Chile international to his starting line-up, while Ozil was a late replacement for the Arsenal number seven.
The German star was missing for both of the north London side’s victories over BATE Borisov and Brighton to raise further questions about his ongoing situation at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal legend Henry admitted that he was surprised to see Wenger leave out both his big-name stars at Chelsea, adding that he expected the Gunners boss to start Ozil against West Brom and not leave the German on the bench.
“Sanchez or Ozil whether they are fit or not, they play. I noticed something at Chelsea,” Henry told Sky Sports.
“When Sanchez came on, they put him up front because they were so well organised. Ozil comes on and Sanchez comes off. Maybe we are reading too much into it.
“It’s something Arsene Wenger wouldn’t have done back in the day. Usually it’s you’re back, you’re the man, you play. The other day he was like, ‘hang on a minute, the team has been working hard’. He has seen the other players working hard.
“It is something I didn’t see before. Like any other player, they have to wait a bit.”
Both Ozil and Sanchez have entered the final 12 months of their current deals at the Emirates Stadium.
