Martin Keown warns Mesut Ozil: Arsenal won’t sell unless it suits them
The Arsenal legend doesn't expect Arsene Wenger to sell Mesut Ozil in January unless the deal is very attractive for the Gunners
Martin Keown has warned Mesut Ozil that Arsene Wenger will only sell the midfielder if the deal suits Arsenal.
The Germany international is facing an uncertain future at the north London club amid talk of a potential controversial move to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
Ozil has entered the final 12 months of his current Arsenal deal to raise questions about the German midfielder’s long-term future at the FA Cup holders.
The 28-year-old has refused to entertain the notion of signing a contract extension at the Emirates Stadium – so far, which raises the possibility of Ozil leaving for nothing next summer.
Wenger could cash in on the World Cup winner in the next transfer window to avoid losing the attacking midfielder on a free transfer at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Former Arsenal defender Keown has reassured Gunners supporters that Wenger will only sanction Ozil’s sale if the deal suits the north London club.
“If Wenger does decide to sell Ozil in January it will be for the benefit of the club, not the player,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Arsenal might as well get some return on him before he can leave for nothing and his departure may benefit the team.
“I have nothing against Ozil — he is a wonderful talent. But it looks as if he is not giving Arsenal any consistency in his readiness for selection.”
Ozil became Arsenal’s most-expensive signing of all-time in 2013 when the Gunners signed the Germany international in a £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013.
The Gunners boss spent £52m on club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette to sign the striker from Lyon last summer.
