Michael Owen questions why Arsenal star is still held in such high esteem
The former Liverpool legend raises serious doubts about Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil
Michael Owen admits he can’t understand why Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil still commands so much respect at the north London club.
The Germany international was a noticeable absentee from the Arsenal side on Sunday afternoon as the Gunners eased to a 2-0 victory over Brighton at The Emirates.
Arsene Wenger confirmed that Ozil would miss the Premier League clash due to a troublesome knee problem to extend an underwhelming start to the season for the World Cup winner.
Ozil hasn’t started a game in all competitions since a 3-0 win against Bournemouth in their opening Premier League fixture in September.
Arsenal produced a resilient performance in a goalless draw with defending Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge in the absence of Ozil.
Wenger was urged to stick with the same starting line-up and think twice about reintroducing Ozil back into the Arsenal team.
Former Liverpool legend Owen raised some serious doubts about Ozil heading into the international break with the former Real Madrid star’s future still up in the air.
“I’ve been his biggest critic for some time now,” Owen told BT Sport. “I think he’s a lucky boy to still be held in the esteem he’s held in, in the circles of football.”
The German midfielder was criticised for his disastrous performance in a 4-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in their final Premier League game in August.
Ozil has entered the final 12 months of his current Arsenal contract.
