Arsene Wenger told Arsenal star ‘best in the world’ in his position
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is the best target man in the world, according to his former team-mate Younes Belhanda
Arsene Wenger has been told that Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is the best target man in the world.
The France international’s former Montpellier team-mate Younes Belhanda made the big claim as Giroud returned to Didier Deschamps’ national team set-up.
The 30-year-old has endured a tough couple of seasons at the north London side after falling down the pecking order at The Emirates under Arsene Wenger.
Giroud is facing an even tougher task to break back into the Arsenal team on a regular basis after the Gunners signed Alexandre Lacazette in a club-record £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon.
The 30-year-old has made seven substitute appearances in the Premier League this season with the winner in a 4-3 victory over Leicester City on the opening day of the Premier League campaign.
Giroud scored in Arsenal’s 4-2 win against BATE Borisov in the Europa League last month after a return of two goals in 10 games in all competitions.
Galatasaray midfielder Belhanda, who played alongside Giroud at French club Montpellier, hailed Giroud as the world’s best target striker.
“For me, Olivier is one of the best forwards in his role,” Belhanda told RMC Sport.
“He’s someone who keeps the ball up really well, who knows how to make his number 10 or his wingers play because he has a target man game few strikers have.
“There isn’t a striker in the world who’s better than him as a target man. Especially with the France team, he scores, so you can’t hold anything against him.
“At club level, he doesn’t play that much, but when you have a player in the national team who scores and helps the team win, you can’t say anything.”
Giroud has scored 100 goals in 237 games in all competitions during his five-year stint at the Emirates Stadium following his £10.7m move to the Gunners from Montpellier in 2012.
