Arsene Wenger lavished praise on Mesut Ozil after his impressive performance in Arsenal’s 5-2 win at Everton on Sunday.

The German playmaker was back to his best against the Toffees as he scored one and set up another to help the north London side claim the three points on Merseyside.

Ozil’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent months after both he and Alexis Sanchez entered into the final 12 months of their contracts at The Emirates.

It remains to be seen whether Ozil will still be an Arsenal player next season, but it seems clear that Wenger wants the German to stay at the club beyond the next two transfer windows.

Speaking at his post-match news conference at Goodison Park, Wenger said: “He was superb. Agile, quick, intelligent.

“Always at the service of the team with his quality of his passing and when he is at that level, he is an exceptional football player.”

Ozil will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action next weekend with a home clash against Swansea City.

Their win over Everton left Wenger’s men in fifth place in the Premier League table and nine points behind leaders Manchester City after nine games of the new season.

The Gunners had to settle for Europa League football this season after they finished fifth last term.
