Martin Keown sends advice to Arsenal about Alexis Sanchez contract
The Arsenal legend offers Arsene Wenger some advice about Alexis Sanchez's current contract situation
Martin Keown believes Arsenal should keep Alexis Sanchez until the very last day of his contract.
The Chile international is facing an uncertain future at the north London outfit after entering the final 12 months of his current deal.
The Gunners have attempted to enter into negotiations over a contract extension but an agreement has failed to materialise.
Sanchez was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer transfer window but a potential deal collapsed on transfer deadline day.
The 28-year-old could leave on a free transfer next summer unless Arsenal are able to convince Sanchez to extend his stay.
While the Gunners will be hoping to secure Sanchez’s long-term future, Keown suggested that Arsenal should resist the temptation to sell the 28-year-old in January transfer window.
“Losing to Sanchez to City would significantly weaken Arsenal and strengthen a direct rival,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“If it was up to me, I would keep Sanchez until the very last minute of his contract.”
Arsenal signed Sanchez in a £35m deal from Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window after seeing off competition from Liverpool for the South American.
The Gunners forward has scored 73 goals in 151 games in all competitions during three-season stint at the Emirates Stadium so far.
The north London side have won the FA Cup twice in three seasons since Sanchez moved to Arsenal from La Liga giants Barcelona.
