Mark Lawrenson sends blunt message to Arsenal about Mesut Ozil
The Liverpool legend believes Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is dispensable at The Emirates
Arsenal shouldn’t be too bothered about losing Mesut Ozil at the end of the season, Mark Lawrenson has claimed.
The Germany international has entered the final 12 months of his current Arsenal deal to raise the possibility of the attacking midfielder leaving for nothing next summer.
Alexis Sanchez is in the same situation as Ozil and the Chile international has been linked with a move to Manchester City regularly over the past year or so.
Ozil, on the other hand, has been spordically linked with some European clubs but Sanchez’s future has dominated the headlines given his impact at Arsenal.
Manchester United have been touted as a potential option for Ozil given his previous working relationship with Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.
The 29-year-old has been criticised for his poor start to the 2017-18 season and the World Cup winner has struggled with some fitness issues.
Ozil scored his first Premier League goal and teed up Alexandre Lacazette in a 5-2 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson appeared to suggest Ozil should cut their losses with the German playmaker.
“The problem is Ozil and Sanchez,” Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They could lose them. I wouldn’t be too bothered if you lost Ozil.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal in a 42.5m deal from Real Madrid in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term.
Arsenal haven’t come any closer to winning the Premier League title since Ozil’s move to The Emirates.
