Steven Gerrard critical of ‘boring’ Man United after 1-0 win at Benfica
The Liverpool legend criticises Manchester United's dull performance in Wednesday night's 1-0 win at Benfica
Steven Gerrard was critical of Manchester United’s boring performance on Wednesday night despite Jose Mourinho’s men securing a 1-0 win at Benfica.
The Red Devils made the trip to Portugal looking to build on their 100 per cent start to the 2017-18 Champions League group-stage campaign.
Manchester United made the breakthrough in the second half after Benfica’s teenage goalkeeper Mile Svilar carried Marcus Rashford’s free-kick over the line to give the visitors a fortuitous lead.
The Red Devils clung on for three points despite some late pressure from the hosts as Jose Mourinho’s men moved onto nine points at the top of Champions League Group A.
Indeed, Manchester United have now scored eight times and kept two clean sheets in their opening three European fixtures this term to edge closer to the knockout stage.
However, former Liverpool captain Gerrard wasn’t too enthused with the quality of football on display at the Estadio de Luz.
“It was a boring game really,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“It’s job done for Man United. They’ve got one foot in the knockout round. It was a poor game of football.”
Manchester United managed to blunt Gerrard’s former club at Anfield last weekend when Mourinho’s conservative tactics managed to deny Liverpool a winner in a goalless draw on Merseyside.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table and two points behind current leaders Manchester City after eight games.
