Manchester United will continue their march towards the last 16 of the Champions League by beating Benfica 2-1 in Portugal on Wednesday night, according to Charlie Nicholas.

The Red Devils head into the game looking to continue their fine form in Europe’s elite club competition, having beaten CSKA Moscow and Basel in their opening two games in the top flight.

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon to leave them second in the top flight table.

However, former Arsenal star Nicholas is tipping Jose Mourinho’s men to return to winning ways by beating Benfica on Wednesday night in Portugal.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “This is another Jose Mourinho job. Go to an old rival and frustrate them.

“These are the sort of games he relishes, neutralising the opposition and leaving with a narrow result.

“Benfica are not the force they once were either. When I used to watch Benfica they were always an attack-minded team and strong at home, but they don’t have the same intrigue and excitement.

“Even two or three years ago they had four or five names which would jump out at you, but I see this being quite a scrappy affair between two sides unwilling to give much away.

“Mourinho will make three or four changes, bring back Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata to help them get a result which will put them on the brink of qualifying.”

Manchester United secured their place in the Champions League this season by winning the Europa League last term under Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League last term but beat Ajax in the Europa League final to seal their spot in the group stage of the Champions League for this term.

Manchester United, who finished sixth in the table last term, return to Premier League action this weekend with a trip to Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.
