Antonio Conte has admitted that it will be very difficult for Chelsea to defend their Premier League title this season after their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Blues slumped to their second successive defeat in the Premier League against the Eagles at Selhurst Park to leave them nine points behind leaders Manchester City after eight games of the new campaign.

Chelsea were hoping to defend their Premier League title after having won the top-flight crown in style last season in Conte’s first campaign at the club.

However, it now looks as though they are set to face an uphill task in trying to win the title while also contending for trophies on three other fronts.

And Conte has appeared to admit that it will be tough for the Blues to successfully defend their Premier League title in his second season at the club.

Conte told Chelsea’s website: “Every season is different. Last season we didn’t play in the Champions League or Europa League.

“This season we are facing four competitions. We are having a few problems to do this because when you have three or four injuries you are in trouble.

“This season we have to try to build something important for the future, to give possibilities to the new players to get more experience in this league, and to give opportunities to the young players to show they deserve to stay and play for Chelsea.

“We must have patience this season. It won’t be easy.”

Chelsea are now preparing to return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they host Serie A side Roma at Stamford Bridge.

The west London side have made a strong start to the new season in Europe, having won both of their opening Champions League games against Qarabag and Atletico Madrid.
