Pundit: Unsung Chelsea hero is the Blues’ player of the year, not Morata
Chris Kamara explains why he thinks Cesar Azpilicueta is Chelsea's standout player this season
Chris Kamara believes that Cesar Azpilicueta has been Chelsea’s standout player this season, and not Alvaro Morata.
Morata has been earning plenty of praise for his performances for the Blues since signing for the west London club from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old has scored six goals and made two assists in eight Premier League games for the west London side and looks as if he will have no problem adapting to the rigours of English football.
Azpilicueta once again proved his worth to Chelsea on Saturday when he scored the Blues’ third goal in their 4-2 comeback win over Watford at Stamford Bridge.
And Kamara feels that the Spanish full-back does not get the credit he deserves for the strong performances he has produced in recent weeks.
Speaking on Sky Sports on Sunday, Kamara said: “Chelsea fans might say Morata is their player of the season so far.
“I’m going with Azpilicueta.
“The reason why I am going with him is because he plays everywhere in the three central defensive positions.
“He plays the right wing-back position, he started the game (against Watford) in the right wing-back position.
“But (Marcos) Alonso went off and he ended up on the left wing in that wing-back position.
“And he makes this (goal), he gets a bit of luck don’t get me wrong, but the important goals that he’s got already this season himself and the goals that he’s made for Morata, I think he’s an unsung hero.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action next weekend with a trip to Bournemouth on Saturday evening.
The Blues find themselves nine points behind leaders Manchester City after nine games of the new season and look like they’re facing an uphill struggle to catch Pep Guardiola’s men.
Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the last three seasons.
