Chelsea warned that summer transfer will ‘hit them like ton of bricks’

Jermaine Jenas discusses Diego Costa's exit from Chelsea and how it will impact the Blues

Jermaine Jenas has warned Chelsea that losing Diego Costa will be a huge miss for the west London club this season.

The Spanish striker opted to leave Stamford Bridge to return to Atletico Madrid last month after he was deemed to be surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte at the west London club.

Costa was a key player for Chelsea last season and he helped the Blues to win the Premier League title for the second time in three seasons.

Chelsea moved to bring in Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid as their new forward and the Spanish striker has made a brilliant start to life at the club, scoring six goals in his first seven Premier League outings.

However, former midfielder Jenas believes that Costa’s absence will prove to be a huge blow to Conte’s side throughout the course of the 2017-18 campaign.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Jenas said: “You need a player like that in your team. It’s always going to make it a fight with Costa. Losing a character is massive for a team.

“We lost Craig Bellamy at Newcastle. Losing a player who wants to fight and scrap all the time, it hits you like a ton of bricks.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action after the international break with a trip to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace.

The west London club were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in their most recent Premier League outing last weekend when Kevin De Bruyne scored the winner in the second half.
