Antonio Conte told Chelsea signing very different to Diego Costa

Robbie Earle highlights the difference between Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata and ex striker Diego Costa

Robbie Earle believes Alvaro Morata is different to his Chelsea predecessor Diego Costa despite effortlessly filling the controversial striker’s void.

The Spain international was signed in a £58m deal from La Liga champions Real Madrid in the summer transfer window to improve Chelsea’s squad.

Morata was drafted in to help replace Costa after Antonio Conte told the controversial 28-year-old that he is free to leave the west London side.

Costa scored 20 goals in Chelsea’s title-winning seasons under Jose Mourinho in 2014-15 campaign and under Conte last term.

The Brazilian-born forward completed a return to Atletico Madrid on loan last week with the Spanish side set to re-sign Costa on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Morata has helped Chelsea fans to forget about Costa with his first Chelsea hat-trick in a 4-0 victory over Stoke City last weekend.

The summer signing has scored six goals in six games in the Premier League to challenge Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku at the top of the goal-scoring charts.

Former Wimbledon forward Earle explained the difference between Costa and Morata.

“What’s fascinating is the difference in the two players,” Earle told NBC Sport.

“Diego Costa almost wants the physical contact. He is like a UFC fighter – he wants to fight with the defenders.

“Morata wants to play in the space between them, in front of them or behind them.

“He doesn’t want contact. He has pace on the outside. He has made a great start to his Chelsea career.”

Morata was powerless to prevent Chelsea from suffering a 1-0 loss to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

The Spanish striker was forced off with a first-half injury.
