Chris Sutton has claimed that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte made a big mistake not strengthening his squad in the summer transfer window.

The Blues manager led the west London side to the Premier League title in his first full season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea finished seven points clear of their closest title challengers Tottenham Hotspur as Conte took advantage of a lack of Champions League football.

The defending champions missed out on Romelu Lukaku in the summer as the Belgian forward opted to move to their title rivals Manchester United.

The Red Devils also managed to complete a surprise £40m deal to sign Serbia international Nemanja Matic in August.

Conte strengthened his Chelsea squad with six players in the summer transfer window ahead of their return to the Champions League.

The Blues signed Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata, Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta.

However, Chelsea have already lost three games in eight outings in the Premier League this term to raise serious questions about their title defence.

Former Blues striker Sutton was critical of Conte’s transfer activity following a disappointing summer window.

“I admire what he [Conte] has done but I think he’s made errors in not strengthening in the window I do,” Sutton told Metro.

“That will ultimately cost them this season. Especially when you see what the Manchester clubs are doing. You could argue when you are champions that’s a good time to attract players.”

Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons.
