Danny Mills blames Chelsea defender’s struggles on John Terry exit
The ex Man City defender doesn't believe David Luiz has maintained his standards since John Terry left Chelsea
Danny Mills has suggested that John Terry’s departure has had an adverse effect on Chelsea defender David Luiz.
The defending Premier League champions have made a solid start to the season but have shown some defensive frailties at times.
Luiz was praised for his mature performances throughout the 2016-17 season after the Brazilian defender helped Chelsea to win the title in his first season back at Stamford Bridge.
The 29-year-old formed a back three alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill but had the calming influence of Terry in the background.
Luiz was sent off during Chelsea’s goalless draw with Arsenal in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge earlier this month. The South American has also picked up three yellow cards.
Former Manchester City defender Mills suggested that Luiz is missing Terry’s influence in the Chelsea dressing room.
“I think Luiz gets in his head and becomes a little bit rash,” Mills told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“We didn’t really see that last season. Maybe the departure of John Terry not being around the place. Having a word. Keeping him calm. Telling him to play his game. Last season he was absolutely brilliant.”
Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons.
The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window to improve his squad ahead of the new campaign.
The west London side haven’t won the Champions League title since 2012.
