Ian Wright: I’d love to play against Chelsea star, you can get in his head

The Arsenal legend explains why he would relish the chance to come up against Chelsea defender David Luiz

Ian Wright has admitted that he would like to have played against Chelsea defender David Luiz.

The Brazil international returned to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain in a £50m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Luiz’s move back to the west London side was greeted with surprise but Antonio Conte transformed the South American into one of the Premier League’s best defenders last term.

The 31-year-old was a key member of Conte’s team as Chelsea won the Premier League title for the second time in three seasons.

Only Tottenham Hotspur conceded less goals than Chelsea in the 2017-18 season as the Blues finished seven points ahead of their London rivals.

Luiz, though, has made a disappointing start to the current campaign following some erratic performance in Conte’s defence.

The Brazilian received a straight red card during Chelsea’s goalless draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge last month.

Luiz conceded a penalty in the first half at Atletico Madrid to allow Antoine Griezmann break the deadlock from the penalty spot before Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi spared their team-mate’s blushes.

Former Arsenal striker Wright made the bold claim that he would have relished the chance to come up against Luiz.

“I’d like to play against Luiz. He lacks concentration at certain times,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He is a good footballer and he constantly wants to show it. I’d be in and around him because you can get something from him and you can get in his head.”

Luiz was part of the Chelsea team that won the Champions League and the Europa League in successive seasons.

The Blues are looking to become the first team since Manchester United to retain their Premier League crown.
