Eden Hazard told he must step his game up at Chelsea this season
Eden Hazard needs to rediscover his top form for Chelsea this season, says Lothar Matthaus
Eden Hazard must step his game up and rediscover the form which led to him winning the PFA player of the year award with Chelsea two seasons ago, according to Lothar Matthaus.
The 26-year-old playmaker has been gradually working his way back to full fitness for the west London side after having suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the summer and requiring surgery to correct the problem.
Hazard helped Chelsea win the Premier League title for the second time in three seasons last term as he regained some of his best form under new manager Antonio Conte.
That came after Hazard and his Chelsea team-mates suffered a significant dip in form during the 2015-16 campaign as the Blues ended up 10th in the table.
Hazard had been crowned as the PFA player of the year in the 2014-15 campaign as he helped to inspire Chelsea to the title under Jose Mourinho.
And Matthaus believes that it is now time for Hazard to step his game up and show what he can do for the Blues this season.
Speaking to the Sun, Matthaus said: “Two years ago he was the best player in England and he must get back to that level as Chelsea need his pace and directness.”
Chelsea will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Watford at Stamford Bridge.
