The Spain internationals started his Blues career as a full-back after Rafael Benitez signed the Marseille defender in an £8m deal in the 2013 January transfer window.
Azpilicueta proved to be a versatile defender with the ability to play at left-back and right-back but current Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has tended to use the 28-year-old in a centre-half role.
Under Conte’s management, Azpilicueta formed an impressive centre-half partnership with Gary Cahill and David Luiz as part of a back three to help Chelsea win the title last season.
The arrival of Antonio Rudiger has allowed Conte to use Azpilicueta as a wing-back this term but the Spanish star has still excelled when in a centre-half role.
Former Liverpool star Carragher has hailed Azpilicueta as one of the Premier League’s best defenders.
“His Chelsea team play a slightly different system with three at the back, but Azpilicueta has to go in there as he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League,” Carragher told the Daily Telegraph.
Chelsea lost 1-0 to title rivals Manchester City in their last Premier League game before the international break.
The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window including Germany and Roma defender Rudiger.
The west London side signed wing-back Davide Zappacosta from Torino in an £8m deal in the summer transfer window.
