Antonio Conte warned Chelsea signing is no Nemanja Matic
Ray Wilkins doesn't believe Chelsea signing Tiemoue Bakayoko is a good enough upgrade on Nemanja Matic
Ray Wilkins has warned Chelsea that Tiemoue Bakayoko is not an adequate replacement for Nemanja Matic.
The Premier League champions signed the France international in a £40m deal from AS Monaco in the summer transfer window to improve their defensive midfield options.
However, Chelsea made the surprising decision to sell Matic in a £40m transfer to Manchester United in August despite handing their title rivals a key player.
Indeed, Matic has proven one of the final pieces of Jose Mourinho’s jigsaw at Old Trafford alongside Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.
The 29-year-old has helped Manchester United to win six of their seven Premier League games and has protected Mourinho’s defence that has kept six clean sheets this term.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have been rather more exposed with Antonio Conte’s men collecting 12 points from a possible 21 following a loss to Burnley and Manchester City.
The Blues have also drawn with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge as Bakayoko and his five other summer signings get to grips with Premier League football.
Former Chelsea midfielder Wilkins admitted that he isn’t overly impressed with the signing of Bakayoko given Matic’s undisputed quality in midfield.
“Bakayoko is no Matic, not yet anyway,” Wilkins told Sky Sports News.
“Matic is just superb. I don’t think we [Chelsea] are anywhere near what we were last year.”
Matic was part of two Chelsea title-winning teams of the past three seasons.
