N’Golo Kante: What I really think about my new Chelsea role
The Chelsea midfielder discusses his new role for the Blues in last month's 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid
N’Golo Kante has revealed that he relished the challenge of playing in a more advanced midfield role in Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid last month.
The west London side produced arguably the best performance from any Premier League team in this season’s Champions League competition in the Spanish capital.
Chelsea fell behind in the first half despite dominating the European clash after Antoine Griezmann broke the deadlock from the penalty spot following David Luiz’s reckless foul.
However, the defending Premier League champions showed character to bounce back from the setback after Eden Hazard teed up Alvaro Morata to score the equaliser.
Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi scored an added-time winner to secure three points for the visitors in dramatic fashion against the La Liga giants.
Kante was used in an attacking midfield role to disrupt Atletico’s ball-playing midfielders and Conte’s tactical alteration worked well.
The France international has established himself as one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders since his move to the Premier League in 2015.
However, Kante welcomed the chance to play in a different role and test himself against the best midfielders in the Champions League.
“It’s my first season in the Champions League and I enjoy to play this kind of game,” Kante told Chelsea’s magazine.
“Against Atletico we had a really good game, we made a lot of chances, we deserved to score first, but they did, and we reacted very well to that to win the match.”
Kante added: “The manager changed my position. We played three midfielders and I needed to play a little bit further forward than my normal position, and I tried to traverse the attack of Atletico.
“It was a good game for the team.”
Chelsea signed Kante in a £30m deal from Leicester City in the 2016 summer transfer window.
